Unfortunately if you forgot it the only way is to re-install the operating system on the desktop.

Try Shiny S's suggestion.
If that doesn't work (i.e., if you'd also set a password for the administrator account), you can reset it with a live CD:http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntucat/how-…

You can try this (For windows XP), but this only works if you never set a password for Administrator (Most of people usually don't)
In the log-in screen. Press your user name and Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice and a new window will come up. Type in Administrator for the account.
Alternatively you can also can also start up the computer in safe mode. While the screen is black and the computer is booting, tap the key that enters you into safe mode (Usually F8).
In safe mode, the Administrator account that is usually hidden reveals it self. Just press it and you're in.
This is how to change your password after getting into the administrator account.
Open up Run (Start menu -> Run or shortcut keys: Windows Key + R)
Type in "control userpasswords2" [without the quotations] then hit enter.
Then reset the password for your user.
Hopefully this helped.
