How Do I View A Second Hard Drive With Windows Already Installed?

A friend has a hard drive (with XP) and wants me to recover some data from it. I only have the drive. If I connect it to my Vista PC (both as a slave and as a Master) I cant access it. In slave mode it says its not formatted (I’m guessing this is because it has Windows on it) and as Master my PC won’t boot.
Any ideas?

  1. you may have to remove the shorting pin from the master drive located on the back of the hard drive then on the second drive move the shorting pin to slave and plug the drive into the slave ribbon hope this helps

  2. It should be in slave mode, not master. But I don’t think it having Windows on it is the cause of the problem; more likely you have set things up so that your system is trying to boot from it? If so there might be two different things you can do to fix this – first, maybe you can swap which cable it’s connected to, to change the boot order. Second, maybe you can change the boot order in your BIOS settings.
