How Do I Connect An Internal Hard Drive To My Computer Without Having To Put It In The Computer?

I know there is a way to get information off a hard drive without actually having to make it a slave drive on my computer. Isn’t there a program and connecting wires that would let me do that?

  1. An external USB case would be the easiest. You mentioned “slave drive” so I’m assuming you’d need a PATA IDE -> USB case and not a SATA IDE -> USB case

  2. if you want it outside, get an external hard drive, or you could just make it a master by plugging it in the the white port on the board( assuming your using an old computer) if its a sata, there are softwares available that should come with the harddrive to convert it to a master. Even so, i still find that using an external hard drive is better than an internal.

  3. You can get USB to IDE/SATA converters that come complete with power supply and will take 2.5 IDE, 3.5 IDE and any sata drive.
They are a lot cheaper than the enclosures and great if you want to copy data of a drive, or test, or scrub drives. I even use mine to connect a DVD to my laptop when I want one. (Lenovo x60s so no optical drive).
The only downside is the drive is sitting about bare, but if its just a temporary connection then who cares.
    Hope this helps.
