This is not possible. The connector on the laptop system board is hard wired and can not be changed.
IDE laptop hard drives are still available but your best bet is to use an external USB/eSATA hard drive. I picked up a 1 Tb drive for $95 a few months ago.

You don't. You don't have a Sata controller for an internal Sata harddrivehttp://support.dell.com/support/edocs/sy…
As answered though, you could either buy an external harddrive that IS Sata, and plug it in using the USB cable, to your laptop,
OR,
You could buy an external enclosure that is Sata, (Has a Sata controller in it), buy the size of Sata harddrive you wish, install it in the external enclosure, (It isn't hard to do at all), and plug the USB cable of the external enclosure into your laptop.
1.Examples of external enclosures that are Sata, and use a DESKTOP Sata harddrive, (Laptop harddrives are 2-1/2 inches across in width. Desktop harddrives are 3-1/2 inches across)http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/…
(12 pages of them. A $29.99 unit will do just fine)
2.Examples of Sata harddrives,http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/…
(For the external enclosures in Number 1 above, you need a 3.5 inch Desktop Sata harddrive. 3.5 = 3-1/2)
