How Long Should It Take To Format A New Hard Drive To An Ntfs Partition?

I recently bought a new hard drive to replace a failed one. I ran BIOS to detect the drive and Primary was listed as 0. I attempted to run a recovery with xp recovery discs and it prompted a function that partitioned the new hard drive though I’m not sure if it is working correctly. All it has done is pop up the Compaq screen with a red bar floating across and it has done this for about an hour. How long should this take?

  1. Quick format takes a few minutes. Normal format may take 10 to 20 minutes depending on size of hard drive.
Your new drive should be properly detected/recognized in BIOS in order to work properly. Check its connection/installation again. Also, your recovery discs might be dependent on some Compaq files in a recovery partition on the old hard drive that is why it won’t work on an empty/new drive.
